There was a time that I would go up and stay the summer with Haven and Susan and Dennis. What I mean to say is a flicker of a memory that is strong in me of Dennis. I have many great memories of Dennis but I should go only one at a time. Dennis is such a character and my memory of him feels very magical.
Well, on the fourth or third of July out in the driveway at night we'd all light off firecrackers. Dennis would over see it and loosely orchestrate it. From the wood picnic table he'd hand us certain firecrackers, usually starting with more tame ones before getting the ones that'd spin and jump with explosions.
It'd be dark. Well, someone eventually lit one thats supposed to launch in the air and spin shoot out sparks.
It tipped over and rocketed under Dennis's feet under the table.
He sat there gently smiling while the fire and whistle of the rocket lit him up. Not on fire, but with flashing lights. He was highlighted in the dark. I was scared. The rocket died out and he sat there fine. We all seemed to be full of adrenaline from fear, but he was not at all. Just very calm and sitting.
