I will always remember Dennis as someone who liked giving to people. He was always happiest when he had something that he thought someone else would like. Who in this (extended) family hasn't been given a television set that was on sale, or 3 identical xeroxed copies of an article he thought you'd like? That was his way.
He had very few things that were "his", few things he kept solely for himself, but even those were negotiable if they could help you or make you happy in some way. He wanted to make sure the people around him were happy, even before he thought of himself.
Even the things he did that would get on my nerves had that same basic generosity at their core. If you were watching television and something happened...anything at all that might have been noteworthy or even mildly funny, he'd tell you what had *just happened* to make sure you didn't miss it. He had to tell you. He couldn't resist.
If something good happened to someone in the (extended) family, he kept that good news flowing so others could be happy for them. He remembered what you liked and disliked as if those preferences were actually his own. If you didn't like, let's say, ranch dressing, he remembered that and always tried to protect you from it. And if you liked ranch dressing he'd always have a bit of the latest news about ranch dressing just waiting for you. often xeroxed and stapled for easy reading. Dennis was part of my life for almost my entire life, and I can say without reservation that I am proud of who he was, and will not forget, ever, how quietly, and fully he supported all of us in everything we tried to do.
